Storm chasers follow the damage
Major hail events bring contractors from every corner of the country into our neighborhoods. Some are honest, but many are not. They knock on doors, hand out flyers, and promise fast fixes at low prices. Once the insurance money is gone, so are they.
We are here to stay
Weddle & Sons is different. We have permanent local offices across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. Our crews live here, our trucks are parked here, and our reputation is tied to every roof we touch. When the storm chasers move on to the next city, we are still answering the phone, still honoring warranties, and still showing up for the families who trusted us the first time.
The types of hail that damage homes in our region
Hail comes in a much wider range of shapes and sizes than most homeowners realize, and the type of hail that hits your home changes what the damage looks like and how insurance responds to it.
- Pea to dime sized hail (1/4 to 1/2 inch): Usually cosmetic on shingles by itself, but wind driven pea hail can still bruise soft asphalt and strip granules from older roofs.
- Quarter sized hail (1 inch): The threshold most insurance carriers use for a functional damage claim. Expect bruising on shingles, dinged gutters, and damaged soft metals like flashing and vent caps.
- Golf ball to tennis ball sized hail (1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inch): Almost always results in a full roof claim. Shingle mats fracture, granules come off in visible circles, and skylights and vents commonly need replacement.
- Baseball sized and larger: Catastrophic damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Structural damage to decking is possible, and full replacement is the norm.
- Wind driven hail: Even smaller stones can cause severe damage when a storm carries 60-plus-mile-per-hour winds. Damage often appears on one exposed slope rather than the whole roof.
What to do when hail is expected in your area
You cannot stop a storm, but you can reduce the damage and make the insurance process smoother if your roof is hit.
- Move vehicles and outdoor items under cover. Hail dents cars, cracks patio tables, and shreds grills. Garage space is the safest bet.
- Close blinds and curtains. If hail breaks a window, closed window coverings can limit flying glass and water intrusion.
- Document your roof and property beforehand. A few photos of your roof, siding, and gutters from the ground give you a baseline if you later need to file a claim.
- Park away from large trees. Wind driven hail plus falling branches can turn a manageable storm into serious structural damage.
- Have a local roofer’s number saved. When the storm passes, you want a company with actual offices, not a P.O. box in another state.
Repair vs. replacement: which makes sense for hail damage?
Not every hail hit means you need a new roof. The right approach depends on the extent of the damage, the age of the roof, and whether matching shingles are still available.
A repair is usually the right call when damage is limited to a small area, the roof is relatively new, and the existing shingle color and style can still be matched. We replace damaged shingles, reseal lifted areas, and address any minor flashing issues.
A full replacement is usually recommended when an inspection finds eight or more hail hits per test square, when the roof is near the end of its useful life, when matching shingles are discontinued, or when the underlayment and decking have taken on water. In those cases, patching becomes a short-term fix that costs more in the long run.
Our inspectors will walk you through the photos and give you an honest recommendation. If a repair is enough, we will say so. If a full replacement is the better investment, we will explain exactly why.
Work with a roofing company that will still be here after the storm
Hail damage is stressful enough without worrying about whether your contractor will answer the phone next year. Weddle & Sons has been family operated since 1999 with permanent local offices across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. We are not a storm chasing sales crew. We are your neighbors, and we plan to be on roofs in this region for decades to come.
If you suspect hail damage, schedule a free inspection online or call your nearest local office. We will get an inspector out quickly, document everything with photos, and help you understand whether a claim, a repair, or a full replacement is the right next step.
When the next storm rolls through, you will know exactly who to call. Work with a roofing company that has actual offices, not a P.O. box in another state. When the next storm rolls through five years from now, we will still be here to answer the phone.
Protect Yourself
Don’t hire a storm chaser
After every major hail event, out of town contractors flood neighborhoods with door hangers and high pressure sales pitches. They often ask homeowners to sign contracts before an insurance adjuster even arrives, then disappear once the check clears. If something leaks a year later, the phone number no longer works and the warranty is worthless.
Weddle & Sons is different. We have been family operated since 1999 with permanent local offices across the region. Our crews live in the communities we serve, our trucks are parked here year round, and our reputation depends on every roof we touch. When the storm chasers move on to the next city, we are still answering the phone.
Warning signs of a storm chaser
- Knocks on your door uninvited after a storm
- Pressures you to sign a contract immediately
- Asks you to sign over your insurance check
- Only has a P.O. box or out of state address
- Promises to “pay” your deductible or waive it
- Refuses to put details in writing
What to do immediately after a hail storm
Stay safe first
Wait until the storm has fully passed before going outside. Avoid downed power lines, standing water, and damaged trees.
Document from the ground
Take photos of hail stones next to a ruler or coin, damaged patio furniture, dimpled siding, and dented vehicles. Do not climb on the roof yourself.
Check for interior leaks
Look for water stains on ceilings, damp insulation in the attic, and dripping around light fixtures. Place a bucket under active leaks and call us for emergency tarping if needed.
Call a local roofer before the adjuster
We will inspect at no charge, document damage with photos, and meet your adjuster on site so nothing is missed in the claim.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Don’t see your question? We’re always happy to talk things through, no pressure, no jargon.
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
Look for dented or missing shingles, granules collecting in gutters, cracked vents, dings on metal flashing, or bruised spots that feel soft when pressed. Damage on the roof itself is often invisible from the ground, so the safest way to know is a free inspection from a local roofing contractor who can document everything with photos.
What size of hail actually damages a roof?
Asphalt shingles can start to show functional damage at around one inch, roughly the size of a quarter. Hail over one and a quarter inches almost always causes damage worth documenting. Smaller hail driven by high winds can still bruise shingles, so a professional inspection is the only reliable way to tell.
What are the different types of hail we see in this region?
The Midwest and Front Range see everything from small pea and dime sized hail up to softball sized stones. Common categories are pea (1/4 inch), marble (1/2 inch), quarter (1 inch), golf ball (1 3/4 inch), tennis ball (2 1/2 inch), and baseball or larger. Wind driven hail, even at smaller sizes, can shred shingles at odd angles and cause damage that a straight down storm would not.
Should I file an insurance claim before calling a roofer?
You can call us first. We will inspect your roof at no charge and give you an honest assessment of whether the damage is significant enough to justify a claim. If it is, we help you document it and meet the adjuster. If it is not, we will tell you that too, so you avoid an unnecessary claim on your record.
What is the typical hail damage insurance claim process?
It usually goes free inspection, claim filed with your carrier, adjuster meeting on site with your roofer, approved scope and payment schedule, material selection, install, final invoice, and depreciation release. From first call to check in hand often takes a few weeks, and we walk you through each step.
When is a repair enough versus a full roof replacement?
A repair makes sense when damage is localized, the roof is relatively young, and shingles can still be matched. A full replacement is usually recommended when there are eight or more hail hits per test square, when the roof is older and near end of life, when shingles are discontinued and cannot be matched, or when the underlayment and decking have taken on water.
What is a storm chaser?
Storm chasers are out of town contractors who follow severe weather events, pressure homeowners into quick contracts, and often disappear before warranty work is complete. Weddle & Sons has permanent local offices and crews who live in the communities we serve.
Do you work with insurance adjusters?
Yes. Our team meets adjusters on site, shares photo documentation, and explains the scope of damage so your claim reflects what your roof actually needs. We are not a public adjuster and we do not negotiate your policy for you, but we make sure the roofing scope is complete and accurate.
How long do I have to file a hail damage claim?
It varies by policy and carrier, but most homeowners have one to two years from the date of the storm. Waiting too long can make damage harder to prove, so we recommend scheduling an inspection as soon as possible.
Will my rates go up if I file a claim?
Insurance rates are typically affected by the overall storm event in your area, not by an individual claim for covered damage you did not cause. We recommend talking with your agent for specifics on your policy.
What should I do if hail is in the forecast?
Move vehicles into the garage or under cover, bring in patio furniture and grills, close blinds to protect glass from breakage, and park away from large trees. There is not much you can do to protect the roof itself, but documenting its pre storm condition with a few photos can help later if you need to file a claim.
Do you offer emergency tarping after a major storm?
Yes. If shingles are missing or the roof deck is exposed, we can get a crew out to tarp the affected areas and prevent water intrusion while the claim and full repair are being scheduled.
