The most common roof leak point, fixed properly
The chimney is where roofs leak most often. Brick, mortar, metal, and shingles all meet at one penetration, and the flashing tying the chimney into the roof is where small shortcuts turn into big problems. Most attempts at chimney flashing repair come down to fresh sealant smeared over the existing metal, which buys a season or two at best. We do it differently. Every Weddle chimney flashing job starts with a real diagnosis, then a permanent fix that is built to last as long as the rest of the roof.
Weddle & Sons has been a locally operated roofer since 1999. Our crews have handled thousands of chimney flashing repairs across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, and Wyoming. We focus on the roofing side of the chimney — flashing, shingles, and underlayment — and we leave masonry, crown, and cap work to qualified masons.
Common chimney flashing work we handle
- Step flashing. Individual pieces tucked into each shingle course up both sides of the chimney, lapped and fastened the right way so water always sheds over the next piece down.
- Counter flashing. A second layer cut into a reglet or properly terminated against the masonry to cover the top edge of the step flashing and seal the joint to the chimney.
- Cricket installation. A small saddle structure on the upslope side of wider chimneys that diverts water and snow load around the chimney instead of damming against it.
- Shingle and underlayment integration. New ice and water shield, underlayment, and shingles around the chimney whenever the existing roofing is compromising the flashing detail.
- Chimney leak diagnosis. We do not guess. Every repair starts with a thorough inspection of the flashing, shingles, and surrounding roof so we recommend the right fix instead of the easiest one.
Why chimney flashing belongs with a roofer
Flashing is roofing, not masonry. It has to be woven into the shingle courses, integrated with underlayment and ice and water shield, and finished in materials that match the service life of the surrounding roof. As a CertainTeed PRO, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, and Tesla Premier Certified roofer, our chimney flashing repair is held to the same written standard as the rest of the roof we install.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Don’t see your question? We’re always happy to talk things through, no pressure, no jargon.
Why does my chimney leak?
On a roof, the most common source of a chimney leak is failed flashing where the chimney meets the shingles. Proper diagnosis is critical, and we never just slather sealant and call it fixed. Note: we handle the flashing and roofing side only, not masonry, crown, or cap work.
How do you diagnose chimney leaks?
We start every chimney flashing job with a real inspection. We check the step flashing, counter flashing, shingles, and underlayment around the chimney to find the actual source of the leak before recommending any work.
How much does chimney flashing repair cost?
Cost depends on chimney size, roof pitch, and the condition of the surrounding shingles. We provide a clear written quote after a free inspection so there are no surprises.
Should chimney flashing be replaced when the roof is replaced?
Yes. Reusing old chimney flashing on a new roof is one of the most common shortcuts that leads to early leaks. Every Weddle roof replacement includes new step and counter flashing around the chimney.
Do you do chimney masonry, crown, or cap work?
No. We focus exclusively on the roofing side of the chimney — the flashing, shingles, and underlayment. For crown, cap, or masonry work we recommend bringing in a qualified mason or chimney specialist.
